ST. ANDREW’S COMMITMENT TO MISSION
Of the total 2004 budget of $315,075, ten percent ($31,546) is
committed to Mission Ministry. Allocation to specific areas follows:
Denomination Benevolence ($8000); Pastor Discretionary Fund ($3000);
Interfaith Relief ($900); Loudoun Abused Women’s Shelter ($600);
Loudoun Families for Children ($800); Transitional Housing ($800); Local
Service Projects ($5000); Vision 2010 ($1200); Presbytery Assessment
($7596); Union Theological Seminary ($660); Unspecified Mission
Additions ($2990).
In addition to the above, St. Andrew participates in many other
mission projects. Some of these are:
Promote and assist in organizing Christmas in April each year
when we contribute time and materials to renovate/repair the home of
someone in need.
· Promote and participate in Crop Walk
· Contribute to Church World Service
· Promote One Great Hour of Sharing (proceeds go to
Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, Self-Development of People and the
Presbyterian Hunger Program).
· Our congregants knit hats, mittens and sweaters
which we send to a missionary in China to be distributed to North
Koreans. The past two years, we have sent about 200 knitted items
each year.
· Each year, Mission conducts a yard sale at the
church. 100% of the proceeds go to help fund youth group mission
trips. Last year, the middle school group (Cool Beans) helped at a
mission for the homeless in DC. This year, the high school group is
going to work on the Heifer Project farm in Massachusetts. Mission
Committee funds do not cover all their expenses, so the youth earn
money individually and hold collective fund raisers.
· Support the Society of St. Andrew (not related) in
their gleaning efforts. Every year, the mission committee organizes
a gleaning event wherein a group goes to a farm in the Shenandoah
Valley to gather fruit leftover from the harvest.
· We began our involvement in Malawi by raising funds
for a grain bank in Embangweni which was built and stocked. St.
Andrew has been a collection point for funds from outside sources
for Malawi – over $20,000 has been sent. We also sponsored Laurie
Diehl on a 6-week mission trip to Malawi.
· Provided support to Bill and Beth Rule in their
mission in Malawi. We provided 3 fetal Doppler monitors for their
use. Through individual donations, St. Andrew replaced the roof of
the caretakers home that was destroyed by fire. The women of St.
Andrew worked with the women of Leesburg Presbyterian to put
together home health care kits for Malawi and we contributed to the
cost of the shipping.
· Provide monetary support and volunteers to help
with the Holiday Coalition during the holidays. This year we bought
the contents for 75 stockings for needy children and filled the
stockings. Volunteers helped at the Holiday Coalition
"store".
· Make monthly contributions to Loudoun Habitat for
Humanity.
· Make monthly contributions to Loudoun Interfaith
Relief. We also participate in an ongoing campaign to collect food
items through Mission Committee and Sunday School, last year
delivering about 1500 pounds of food.
· All Sunday School offerings go to the Heifer
Project and the goal this year is to purchase a pair of all the
animals.
· Our Presbyterian Women contributed $520 to COPA
child, Camp Massanetta, Sunnyside Communities and Presbyterian Homes
& Families. They also provided a family-style meal weekly for
participants of the 15-week Hispanic Group Nurturing Program at
Loudoun Abused Women Shelter
