Subject: Responding to the Tsunami Disaster

Hi, All,

I am sending you information that we received in the church office from Jim Williams, the communication director of National Capital Presbytery, concerning ways of responding to the devastating results of the tsunami last weekend in South Asia.  Please take time to look it over after reading my message.

For those who want to make donations through church channels to help with disaster relief, I propose that members and friends of St. Andrew make checks to St. Andrew that are designated "Presbyterian Disaster Assistance" in the memo. These can either be placed in the offering plate on Sundays or mailed to Lil Palmer at the church office (711 West Main Street, Purcellville 20132). I've talked with Lil about this, and she's all set to make sure contributions get where they need to go in a timely fashion.

As contributions come in, Lil can pool together these designated funds to send one large check on a weekly basis to Church World Services for as long as contributions come in. Church World Services (CWS) is the organization that our Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) is working with to provide disaster relief.

The reason for gathering money first at St. Andrew is that pooling funds will cut down on administrative costs at CWS related to processing the volume of checks, as well keeping track of individual contributions for record keeping and tax purposes. It will be much easier for Lil to keep track of individual contributions locally at St. Andrew. The bottom line is that by pooling, eventually more money will go for direct help than for administration.

Let us keep the people from the coastal regions of South Asia in our prayers. Below is the information from Jim Williams.

Take good care, and Peace,
Fred Lyon
