Director of Music Ministry

The purpose of this position is to engage the church in following Jesus Christ through the ministry of music by providing meaningful ways for people, of all ages and abilities, to worship and learn more about the theological and cultural significance of music in a variety of forms. This position plans and coordinates the entire music program for St. Andrew, directing the choir(s) and providing organ and piano music for worship services.

About Saint Andrew Presbyterian:

We are part of the PC(USA) denomination. Our congregation is a tapestry of about 150 families from diverse backgrounds. You will find people of all ages and walks of life here—singles, couples, families with and without children, and those who are single-again. We are proud to be an affirming home for our LGBTQIA+ siblings and a community that embraces racial and economic diversity. We currently offer one Sunday service, which is traditional in style and music, but we are always open to creative and contemporary expressions of worship.

Qualifications:

  • Experience: A minimum of three to five (3-5) years of experience in providing church music, both instrumental and vocal/choral. A commitment to and knowledge of reformed theology and the PC(USA) is required.

  • Education: A degree in music or music education is required. Additional training in sacred music and/or theology is a plus.

  • Specific Skills:

    • Thorough knowledge of sacred music.

    • Proficiency in playing the organ and piano.

    • Demonstrated ability to direct choral groups.

    • Ability to work collaboratively with musicians of all ages: children, youth, and adults.

Accountability:

The Director of Music Ministries reports to the Pastor/Head of Staff. Final selections for worship music are the decision of the Pastor as provided by the Book of Order.

Hours and Compensation:

This is a part-time salaried position. Hours are flexible with the expectation that an average of 5-8 hours a week will be spent on site for Sunday morning worship, weekly rehearsals, and planning meetings. Presence is also required for special services and events, including but not limited to Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, and all Holy Week services from Palm Sunday through Easter.

Pay is commensurate with experience, starting at $25k annually.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Worship Planning: Collaborate with the Pastor on music for all regular and special worship services, including selecting hymns and service music that align with the church year and sermon themes.

  2. Instrumental Music: Play the organ and/or piano for all scheduled worship services and events, preparing preludes, postludes, and other service music as appropriate.

  3. Ensemble Direction: Direct the adult choir(s), bell choir/ensemble, and other vocal/instrumental groups during rehearsals and worship. Recruit, develop, and nurture the musical talents of volunteer singers and musicians.

  4. Program Development: Develop and oversee a comprehensive music ministry, creating opportunities for all ages through offerings such as praise groups, handbell choirs, children’s choirs, and youth choirs. Support and coordinate with all other music leaders and groups, paid or unpaid.

  5. Administration & Resource Management:

    1. Select, purchase, and maintain the church's music library (choral, bell, instrumental).

    2. Ensure compliance with all music copyright licenses and maintain records.

    3. Supervise the maintenance of all church musical instruments (including regular piano/organ tuning) and choir robes.

    4. Prepare and manage the annual music ministry budget in collaboration with the Worship Committee.

  6. Special Services: Provide music for weddings and funerals as requested and available, or otherwise provide a list of approved substitute musicians.
